Are You a Terrorist?

H.R. 2159 is also known as the Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009. Here’s what Chuck Baldwin, presidential nominee of the Constitution Party for 2008, had to say about the bill:

“The bill that I specifically mentioned in my column was Peter King’s bill, H.R. 2159: Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009 which basically permits the Attorney General on his signature to deny transfer of a firearm to anyone that he deems to be ‘a dangerous terrorist’. This is someone that is identified solely on the basis of his opinion. There is no arrest. There is no act that the person has committed. There’s no charge. No sentence, no trial, no anything...just that the Attorney General says, ‘I believe this person is a dangerous terrorist therefore they are not able to buy a firearm.’”

It is extremely important to consider what this bill implies. If passed, it would give the Attorney General and his “designates” the authority to strip you of your Constitutional right to bear arms. And it would allow them to do so without charging you, arresting you, trying you, or even telling you why you are considered to be a terrorist. This means that, hypothetically, these people could view your webpage, read your “opposing” political views, identify you as a dangerous terrorist, and strip you of your rights. And, again, they would not be required to give you any reason at all for their decision and action. It can be argued that, on the surface, this bill might not seem all that bad. I mean, why would we want dangerous terrorists to have guns and explosives? The problem here is that the term “dangerous terrorist” is not defined in any way and, because of this, it could be applied to any and every American citizen.

Baldwin continued to explain how this bill imposes on our civil liberties by saying:

“This is, as you say, fascism. I mean, I know people don’t like to use that word but, the fact of the matter is, this is exactly the definition. Whenever you can arbitrarily without warrant, without cause, deny basic rights to the citizenry you have crossed the Rubicon and now you are in a country that is fascist in nature.”
